To Those Who Are Local, To Those Who Are Far Away

Fellow Portlanders, it would be so lovely to see you tomorrow afternoon (Saturday the 30th) at Olio United, where I and several other designers will be having trunk shows to celebrate the first anniversary of this fabulous shop. I'll be around from noon to two with lots of new sulu-design earrings and necklaces on hand, and I would be truly happy to see you there in person.
For those of you who aren't nearby, I've been trying to update my etsy shop with some regularity. Seeing as the last round of blue earrings were such a hit, my most recent update is all about the blues (different blues, but blues nonetheless), too:

How Sweet It Is

...to have a blog friend like Sadira who sees a vintage plate with cute atomic designs on it and sends it to you because she thinks you might like it. And you do like it. You love it. So you use it right away, twice in one week, to serve the cookies that you're getting way too much mileage out of this summer (I'm gonna owe Smitten Kitchen royalties on the recipe soon). Thank you, sweet Sadira, for such a bright spot in my hectic week.

Asking and Answering

I'm briefly surfacing from under a pile of beads to pop in and respond to a couple recent requests. I'm still busy working on filling earring and necklace orders. I thought I was done. I'm not. I'm getting there. But I thought a little break from my computer break was in order for a couple reasons.
First, a sulu-design etsy shop update with pieces similar to the earrings in my previous post:

Click images for direct links to listings. The blue beads you see above are the last ones I have, and I am unable to get more currently, so if you like them, jump on 'em, folks.
Second, an answer to Sandra who left a comment on my blog a couple weeks ago: I've been digging around, trying to find the directions to the lake we went to on Mount Hood earlier this summer, and am coming up empty-handed. You can find them, though, where we originally found them, in a recent "best of" issue of Portland Monthly magazine (the one with the row of shrubs on the front and a gal with clippers behind them) on a one-page story on local watering holes. We went to the one featured in the middle. Hope that helps...
I'll back again soon, friends. I see a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope you're enjoying summer's beautiful end.

When It Rains it Pours

And I'm not complaining one bit. We finally got a break from a pretty nasty heat wave here in Portland with a couple days of moody, romantic rain (at least that's what I'm calling it now... get back to me on what I think of the rain come February).
Some figurative pouring has been happening, too. I've been a bit harried trying to get lots of sulu-design orders filled. As of this week, Thea's Interiors, a cute new vintage shop in the Pearl, is carrying sulu-design pieces. SITE in Astoria, Queens has been restocked with new sulu-design earrings and necklaces. And Liebling in Malmo, Sweden, should be receiving a huge shipment of sulu-earrings any day now. I've been working with a few new beads recently which will make their debut there:

So, in the span of five days, over one hundred sulu-design earrings and necklaces have made their way out my door. I've got blisters, folks. I've also been busily making more new pieces to keep my stock fresh since I'll be participating in a trunk show Olio United on Saturday, August 30, in celebration of their one year anniversary. I'd love it if you stopped by...
What it all comes down to is simply: I'm tired. I guess I could have spit that out a paragraph or so ago, but you know how I like to meander a bit before getting to the point. I'm really stinkin' tired. Good tired, but tired nonetheless. So I'm taking the next few days as computer-free rest time. Minimal e-mailing, no posting, no adding to the etsy shop. I'll check in with you all soon. Until them, get some good sleep. I know I will - I love to sleep while it rains.

Two Birds (A Pigeon Included) with One Stone

Two anniversaries have rounded the corner this week: it's now been a full year since Barry and I have called Portland home (more on that in future posts), and today we celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary. I'm not gonna get all mushy about him here, but if you're a regular reader you know that Barry is my best friend and I am so happy to be married to such a wonderful guy who is truly my perfect partner. And if you know the two of us, you also know lots of good eating is central to any celebration we'd endorse. So we're headed out for breakfast now, and tonight we'll be at one of our favorite Portland restaurants, Le Pigeon. Let the eating begin! Also in honor of both anniversaries, I just put half of the items in the sulu-design shop on sale. Nothing says happy anniversary like a pair of earrings at 20% off, right?
And on another note, thanks to those of you who passed along birthday wishes to my mom. She wasn't able to read them herself as she was out of the office and my parents don't have a computer at home. Let's not even get into the fact that they still use a couple rotary phones at their house... Anyhow, my dad went into his office and printed them out for her, and she was quite touched. Today, she's in the hospital having surgery and she'll be home in recovery for several weeks following. She told me that she was going to ask if there was a computer she could use at the hospital to post a response to your nice comments. How cute is that? I wish her a speedy recovery, and wish you all a wonderful week, friends.

Have you seen her epic comments here?
The woman is funny, supportive, smart, driven, and totally, completely, one hundred percent devoted to her family.
Happy birthday, Momma!

Squeezing the Heck out of Summer

My dad called on Friday to make sure I was alright. "Suz, no post for two days. Is everything okay?" Actually, I've been having myself a grand old time this summer, squeezing in as much fun as the weeks will allow, which hasn't left me with much posting time on the computer. This past week, I stepped away from the blog (for two whole days) to:
meet the adorable Sonya in person
almost meet jewelry design queen Mollie in person (a misunderstood address foiled my plan)
hike to a gorgeous lake hidden away on Mount Hood for a dip in the water
restock earrings at Tumbleweed and Folly
have the best First Thursday experience yet, seeing shows by Angie (the cutest, friendliest gal you could ever want to meet), Evan, and Elizabeth

detail of Angie's awesome encaustic and thread work

cheer riders on at the Twilight Criterium
eat wood-fired oven bagels at the Portland Farmer's Market
rediscover a recipe for simple spring rolls and purchase ingredients for them at Pacific Market
eat tasty Vietnamese sandwiches next door
And today starts my weekend-of-sorts. Must squeeze in more summer fun. Hope you all are enjoying yours!

edit: Barry wondered how I could forget to mention that this week we finally indulged in our first Pine State biscuits. Must be in a food coma...
